Inspiration for Health Ministry, by LEM

Building on the Solid Rock

The Bible as the Foundation for Health Ministry

(For this study, read also: Ministry of Healing Chapter 39)

1. What inspiration for health ministry is found in the Bible?

Mt 19:19 “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” is the reason we want to decrease their suffering through healing ministry

Mt 10:7-8 “preach and heal” is our command

1 Cor 12:9 One of the gifts of the spirit is healing

Acts 5:16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Isaiah 58 gives inspiration and promise to medical missionaries

2. What do the old and new testaments say about the importance of health?

Old Testament has many instructions and principles for good health- (their scientific validity is proof of the divine inspiration of the Bible. For example, instructions for quarantine of disease centuries before germ theory existed).

Exodus 15:26 and said, "If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you."

The new testament teaches that our body is the temple of God and must be cared for as the responsibility of created beings to God (people who know this- easier to quit smoking, etc.)

1 Cor 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

3. Where do we find God’s original plan for a healthy lifestyle in the Bible?

In the story of creation, and the Garden of Eden, we can see God’s original plan for man and His instructions. When we get away from eating natural foods from the earth and living a more natural life, (including exercise, temperance, fresh air, pure water, sunshine, rest, trust in God) disease can result.

4. How do we find the balance in knowing what emphasis to place on teaching about health?

Bible teaches balanced viewpoint toward the health message, (that we should keep it well, but do not bring these things to the most prominent place, as spiritual teachings are the most important- beware of fanaticism);

We remember 1 Corinthians 10:31 “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

But at the same time we should also keep Romans 14:17 in mind (so that works are not made the prominent focus above faith); “...for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

5. How do we know the Gospel work and health work should be done together?

Jn 5:14 “"See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you."” Jesus taught the relationship between sin and disease- so in teaching about health, we must present the Gospel too, not just health lectures!

6. What are some examples of health ministry in the Bible?

Hezekiah- Natural remedies example of him being healed by the fig poultice. God also often gives us a part to play in healing, and that can be through the use of simple remedies which He blesses.

Naaman- Healed by an experience that involved something like hydrotherapy (dipping in the Jordan river). Many people who come to NEWSTART type health programs have had similar experience and are so happy when they start to get off all their medications, etc.

Daniel- Ministered to unbelievers through his example of temperance.

Building on the Rock
Christ illustrated character building by a house built on a rock, against which storm and tempest were powerless, and the house built on the sand, which was swept away. We are living in perilous times. Amidst the changing scenes, with heresy and false doctrines coming in that will test the faith of all, the house built on the solid rock cannot be shaken. But when storm and tempest come, the house built on the sand will fall, and great will be the fall of it. {MM 87.1}

Truth Strengthens the Understanding
The word of God, regarded and studied as it should be, will give light and knowledge. Its perusal will strengthen the understanding. By contact with the purest, most lofty truths, the mind will be enlarged, the taste refined. {MM 88.4}

These things God has been opening before me for many years. In our medical missionary training schools we need men who have a deep knowledge of the Scriptures, men who can teach these lessons to others clearly and simply just as Christ taught His disciples that which He deemed most essential. {MM 70.4}
